Remembering: Nolan Ryan and 5000

Born January 31, 1947 Lynn Nolan Ryan Jr. was already noticed by major league scouts when he was only a sophomore in highschool.

Red Murff, a scout for the New York Mets, decalred him the "best arm I’ve ever seen in my life".

In 1968 he was signed by the Mets, who traded him to the California Angels in 1971.

With the 1973 season he would set a single season record of having 383 strike outs.

From 1980-1988 he would pitch for the Houston Astros, and then in 1979 ended up at the Texas Rangers.

On August 22, 1989 Ryan would throw strikeout five thousand against Rickey Hendrson, of the Oakland A's.

Henderson later said, ''It was an honor to be the five thousandth. As Davey Lopes says, 'If he ain't struck you out, you ain't nobody.' "

Ryan would finish his twenty-seven year career with a total of 5,714, a record that still stands, and likely will for a long time.

During his career, he also threw seven no hitters, yet another record.

Morsi to Visit US

Mohamed Morsi announced that he will be visiting the US in September.

The Egyptian President will first be going to China, and then make his way to the US on September 23.

They will be his first trips, to either country, as President.

Back in July, US President Barack Obama, made an official invite to his Egyptian counterpart.

The US was a close ally of the former regime, and was initially cautious of the changes which took place there.

Many Americans became concerned over the Muslim Brotherhood's rise to power after Hosni Mubarak was removed from his office.

Nine Dead From Ebola in Congo

At least nine people are now dead from an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Health officials in the country say that they are aware of at least six others who are sick from the disease.

The town of Isiro, in the province of Orientale seems to be the center of the outbreak.

Orientale is right next to three other African countries, with the Central African Republic and South Sudan to the north and Uganda to the east.

A national task force is being organized by the Congolese Ministry of Health, and being aided by several international aid groups.

Last month a different strain of Ebola killed sixteen in Uganda.

Ebola is a short term virus, that kills quickly after infecting it's victims, there is no cure, and it is fairly easy to spread.

Hells Angels Suing US

Hells Angels motorcycle group is suing the United States government over it's listing as a criminal organization.

They claim that the status violates their constitutional rights, and are complaining as it keeps their international members from visiting the country.

Originally founded in Southern California, in 1948, the group has spread to thirty-five countries.

Lawyers for the group state that they are "made up of motorcycle enthusiasts who have joined to ride motorcycles together, organize social events, fundraisers, parties and motorcycle rallies", and that the illegal activities they are associated with are the work of individuals, not crimes of the group.

A response from a federal judge is expected within the next couple of weeks.

Aetna Buying Coventry

One of the largest insurance companies in the US is buying out another of it's smaller competitors.

This time Aetna is paying a total of $7.3 billion dollars to buyout Coventry.

Part of that figure is a twenty percent premium on Coventry's stocks.

Payment is being made with a combination of cash and Aetna's own stocks.

Coventry currently insures around 1.5 million people.

News of the buyout raised the worth of both companies' stocks.

Pussy Riot's Latest Song

Three members of the Russian punk band, Pussy Riot, were only sentenced four days ago, but the rest of the band has already released a new song.

The band got in trouble after staging a political protest, including an anti Putin song, inside a Russian Orthodox church.

That protest resulted in three of the members being jailed, and now given a further two years of prison time.

It also brought the little known band to huge international notice.

Not to be deterred, from their message, the remaining four members released a new anti Putin song, called "Putin Lights Up The Fires".

Sung in Russian, the English translation is:

This state may be stronger than time in jail.
The more arrests, the happier it is.
Every arrest is carried out with love for the sexist
Who botoxed his cheeks and pumped his chest and abs.

Denver Fire Wins Battle of The Badges

Saturday night held the first ever Battle of The Badges soccer game, in Denver.

The contest took place at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, between Denver Fire and the Denver Police Department.

All proceeds were split between the Friends of the Fire Department and the Denver Police's Widows and Orphans Fund.

The game took place after the Colorado Rapid's own game.

Despite the final score of four to one, the game was quite evenly played.

Denver Fire was awarded a four foot tall trophy, which will be the prize every year that this game is repeated.

They also took home another trophy, which was given to the winner of the competition for most fundraising, between the two departments.

Clemens Making a Return to Baseball

Former Major League pitcher Roger Clemens will be returning to baseball August 25.

The seven time Cy Young award winner will return to the mound with the AAA Sugar Land Skeeters.

He signed a one game contract with the Houston based team, and they have the option to then sign the fifty year old for future games.

Currently, the Skeeters are ranked third in the Freedom Division of the Atlantic League.

Clemens retired after the 2007 season, after playing for twenty-four years.

Since then he's dealt with accusations of steroid abuse, a count of obstructing Congress, and three of making false statements to congressional investigators.

Stretch of Mississippi River Closed

An eleven mile stretch of the Mississippi River is still closed due to low water.

Since a boat ran aground on August 11, the stretch near Greenville, Mississippi has been shut down.

The Coast Guard is looking at how to best dredge the river, to make it passable again.

At this point there is no timetable for the reopening of the river.

Nearly a hundred boats, ships, and barges are currently stuck by the closure; fifty-seven south bound and forty headed north.

More than half of the United States is experiencing the worst drought in around sixty years, causing dry conditions everywhere that are effecting crops and producing large numbers of fires.

First Trailer and Preview: The Last Stand

The first trailer for Arnold Schwarzenegger's The Last Stand came out Friday. It will be his first real return to the movies, as he is the lead, not sharing the spot light, as he is in The Expendables 2.

Schwarzenegger plays the sheriff of a tiny border town called Sommerton Junction. His character, Owens, left the LAPD after some sort of major incident left his partner crippled.

Meanwhile, the FBI's most wanted masters an escape from a prisoner convoy. His only goal is to escape into Mexico, with his men taking out whatever is in the way.

Naturally Sommerton Junction is the crossing the bad guys have picked, so it ends up left to Owens to handle the job.

The Last Stand will hit theaters on January 18, 2013 and looks to do so with an intense rush.
