The Tri-County Health Department has confirmed that a skunk found in Brighton, Colorado had rabies.
Rabid skunks were unheard of just a few years ago, in Colorado.
Until eleven years ago, skunk rabies was unknown in the country.
Over the last couple years they have become more and more common, but stayed in rural areas.
With this one being located in Brighton, just north of the Denver metro area, fears are that they will begin to be discovered in suburban areas and possibly urban ones.
That would mean a greater risk of other animals or humans becoming infected with the disease.
For now, authorities are warning residents to be extra cautious around
wild animals, or even domestic ones, especially if they're showing any
kind of unusual behavior.
They are also suggesting that everyone be sure
that they, and their animals, are vaccinated against the disease.
If any unusual behavior or dead animals are seen people should be sure to contact their vet or animal control immediately.

North Carolina Considering Bringing Bibles Into Schools
North Carolina is considering a new bill that would bring Bibles into schools.
Under the new bill school districts would be able to decide if they wanted to allow Bible classes in schools.
The classes would be electives, for credit, and in no way be required.
Bipartisan support has already been raised for the bill.
Opponents worry about how it maintains the separation of church and state.
Supporters say that since it is an elective it is acceptable.
It is unclear when the bill would be finally voted on, but if passed the Bible classes would begin in the fall.

Mysterious Ways
We spend so much time fighting God instead of allowing Him to work.
His ways are mysterious and beyond our comprehension.
We put so much effort into trying to put human qualities to Him. That does nothing but limit our faith, which limits our ability to see Him working in our lives.
Yet opening up to Him is one of the scariest things we can do, as it means giving up control. And control is one of the most precious things to a human being.
It is but one way in which we must give ourselves up, so that we can be the most we can be.
Because only in Him can we be all that we are designed to be.

Michigan Seeking to Punish Recycling Smugglers
For over thirty years Michigan has had a program of offering ten cents back for cans and bottles.
It began as a way to promote recycling and has been massively successful.
However, people have been abusing the system and coming in from other states to get more money.
To fight this the state had added a stamp for cans from Michigan.
This still didn't stop the "smugglers" and so now the state is considering more drastic action.
A bill, currently in the state house, would give the state the ability to charge and arrest people who bring in other states cans.
Under the bill, bringing in between one hundred and ten thousand nonreturnable containers would be punishable by up to ninety-three days in jail and a thousand dollar fine.

Six Strikes Your Off
AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner, and Verizon have announced their participation in a program created by the Center For Copyright Information.
Under the program anyone who is caught infringing on copy right will be sent a warning.
If someone receives six warnings, they will immediately find themselves with either severly limited or no internet access.
The companies involved believe that if someone refuses to change their ways after all of the warnings, then clearly they're not going to.
Opponents of the program worry that it will hurt the ability of businesses to offer wifi.
A similar program is set to begin March 2014, in the UK, but with only three strikes.

Hero Rats
A Belgian company is training rats to be mine detectors.
Apopo teaches the rats to sniff out mines so that humans can then come and remove them.
Training takes place in Tanzania, during a nine month long program.
They have been tested in Mozambique to great success.
People there are calling them Hero Rats.
Advantages of the rats are that they are quick workers, as they naturally use their nose to navigate due to their limited eye sight; they can be used by any trainer, not becoming bound to one, like dogs; they are light enough that they can't accidentally set off mines; and they are relatively cheap.
Unfortunately there are some draw backs, such as their short life span, their lack of ability to work in certain climates, and they sometimes require retraining.

Balloon Crash in Egypt Kills 19
Nineteen people were killed when the hot air balloon they were in crashed.
Almost all of those aboard were international tourists.

The pilot and one of the passengers were able to jump out almost immediately, at a low enough altitude to survive.
Other passengers jumped out too late or were killed by the fire and crash.
All balloon flights have been cancelled while the incident is being investigated.

North Korea Expanding Political Prison Camps
North Korea is expanding it's political prison camps.
According to sources in South Korea's government, satellite imagery shows that more buildings are being built at several of the camps.
This could mean that the North is planning on bringing in a lot more prisoners.
Alternately, they could simply be consolidating their camps, expanding some so that others can be eliminated.
Only time will tell which of those they are planning.

Italians began hitting the polls on Sunday for the parliamentary elections.
Voting will continue through Monday, but who's going to win is pretty much set in people's minds.
Center left leader Pier Luigi Bersani is expected to see his party gain thirty-five percent of the vote.
Silvio Berlusconi's center right party is in second place, with expectations of twenty-eight percent.
Current interim Prime Minister Mario Monti has had to watch his centrist alliance surpassed by the other two main parties, looking at being limited to fifteen percent.
Meanwhile, comedian Beppe Grillo's anti political movement, which was only founded four years ago, looks likely to take twenty percent of votes.
Concerns are that with everything so split that no effective government will be possible.

Suicide Bombers Attack Malian Rebel Headquarters
A pair of suicide bombers struck the Malian town of Tessalit, on Friday.
The bombers and three other people were killed in the blasts.
In what might be a show of divisions between rebel forces and Al Qaeda, the target seemed to be a rebel headquarters.
A split between the groups could be good news for the Malian government.
It could mean the rebels would reunite with the government, to remove Al Qaeda, or it could simply mean a three way war.

Chinese Treats Allegedly Making Dogs Sick
Dingo Chip Twists boast real chicken that dogs will love. Your dog may not love the treats so much after suffering ill effects occurring after the treats hit your pup's digestive tract.
Chicken flavored dog treats made in China may have caused severe digestive tract illnesses in over nine hundred reported canines. The FDA confirmed that complaints have continued to pour in. The agency stated it conducted an investigation. However, they do not normally screen or test pet food or treats. As many as five hundred cases of digestive tract infections have now been blamed on Dingo Chip Twists, specifically.
One dog owner stated that he bought the treats for his dog, a normally healthy and sturdy lab-mix. Since, vets bills have passed one hundred and ninety dollars. The dog has been placed on a special diet, which costs even more, to help the dog fight the infection. His dog has been on that special diet, but it has not yet resulted in much improvement. The dog was at a healthy weight of sixty-three pounds before the affliction. In the past couple of days, the pup has lost about ten percent of his body weight, dropping to just under fifty-seven pounds.
Under the warning section for the treats posted on Walgreen's website is included a statement for humans to wash hands immediately after handling the treats. This should set off alarms. Should the treats not be safe for humans to handle, perhaps they shouldn't be fed to a dog.
"Always provide plenty of clean fresh drinking water and visit your veterinarian regularly. Wash hands thoroughly after handling treats."

Midwest US Slammed With Winter Storm
A severe winter storm has blanketed much of the Midwest United States in snow.
Schools all over the plains closed on Thursday, to avoid having to deal with the storm.
Flights throughout the country were cancelled and delayed by the storm.
Many cities went on accident alert as the storm came through leaving messy roads.
A nineteen year old woman was killed in an accident near Giltner, Nebraska, that the sate patrol said was caused by the weather.
Kansas City saw two to three inches an hour during Thursday morning.
Interstate 70 was closed between Hays and Salina, Kansas.
Wichita reported over fourteen inches of snow, the second highest total the city has ever recorded.
Further south, the storm left ice covering a vast area, while parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas dealt with tornado watches and warnings.
The Rockies dealt with the storm, on Wednesday, where it left up to two feet of fresh snow in Colorado's ski slopes.
Even places as far south as Tuscon, Arizona saw snow on Wednesday.
The storm is good news for much of the Midwest due to the drought they are facing.

How Sequestration Would Impact the Benghazi Consulate and Other US Diplomatic Posts
Sequestration, expected to kick in on March 1, would result in $85 billion in cuts in financial year 2013 and a total of $1.2 trillion spread out over ten years. The sequestration is almost a certainty. The approach of potentially disastrous cuts to the military did not stop Congress from authorizing $60.2 billion in additional deficit spending for Hurricane Sandy relief, a pork filled measure which includes billions of dollars for road construction, FBI salaries, Head Start, Smithsonian roof repairs, the National Park Service and the Kennedy Space Center.
And now, President Obama is now pushing a $50 billion stimulus plan as automatic budget cuts while at the same time blaming Republicans for the looming sequester; the sequester that was his idea. Obama has had plenty of opportunities to avert sequestration, but has failed to do so.
The GOP has also been criticized in its handling of the issue. Jonathan Tobin, writing for Commentary Magazine, opines:
“… the idea that Republicans are better off abandoning their principles is not one that will ensure their political survival. A lot of the discussion about the GOP future
rightly revolves around the need to put forward new ideas rather than
to keep pounding the talking points of the past but a Republican Party
that no longer possesses the ability to stand up to Obama’s demagoguery
of these issues is not going to win in either 2014 or 2016. A defeat on
the sequester after the fiscal cliff collapse could presage even worse
to come as the president pursues the rest of his liberal agenda this
year. If Republicans are incapable of mounting a spirited defense of
their position that rejects the president’s false choices in which they
are depicted as defending millionaires at the expense of the middle
class and the poor, they might as well pack up and go home right now.”
“These cuts would severely impair our efforts to enhance the security of US government facilities overseas and ensure the safety of the thousands of US diplomats serving the American people abroad.” Similarly, State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland warned at a press briefing that “cuts of this magnitude would obviously severely impact our ability to execute all of our vital missions overseas, particularly in the areas of national security, diplomacy, development.”
The following is a partial list of how diplomatic posts will likely be impacted by the sequester:
- Efforts to ramp up diplomatic security abroad would be delayed
- $500 million would be cut from global security accounts
- Unspecified cuts would be made to international peacekeeping operations
- Counter narcotics programs, counter terrorism efforts, and non-proliferation activities would be reduced
- The State Department might not be able to effectively provide emergency services to Americans in trouble abroad
- Inability to properly vet visa applications
- Inability to issue passports to Americans in a timely manner
- With the recent uprisings in the Middle East and Africa, for example, US personnel located in those countries would be much more vulnerable
- Benghazi is only one of several dangerous US diplomatic posts and the US Embassy in Turkey was recently attacked.
Under reciprocal treaty obligations, host nations have an obligation to provide security for the diplomatic facilities of the sending states. But, sometimes host nations are unable or not completely committed to fulfilling this responsibility, which can leave a US facility profoundly vulnerable.

Gao Declared Secure Once Again
Malian and French troops have declared Gao secure again.
On Thursday morning, five members of the Al Qaeda fighters managed to infiltrate the city.
They attacked the mayor's offices and then holed up inside the building, after finding it empty.
After a several hour gun battle, Malian and French forces were able to eliminate the threat, without taking any casualties of their own.
Gao being infiltrated once again, has only reiterated that while capturing Gao and the other cities was fairly easy, the war is far from over.

Iran Installing More Advanced Centrifuges
The IAEA, the UN's atomic watch group, reported that Iran is installing more advanced centrifuges.
More advanced centrifuges will allow Iran to speed up their accumulation of nuclear material.
Iran still is adamant that it is all for peaceful purposes, but they are refining the uranium to weapons grade levels, which are high above those needed for energy or medical purposes.
In response to the news, a new UN bill was introduced, to increase sanctions against Iran.
On Tuesday, Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the US are scheduled to meet with Iran, in an attempt to try and convince them to shut down their enrichment programs.
