12 Soldiers Injured in Lightning Strike at Fort Carson

Twelve soldiers were injured by a lightning strike at Fort Carson, on Wednesday.

Eleven are in stable condition, but one is in critical condition.

According to the base spokesman, the soldiers were moving to shelter, due to lightning in the area, when they were struck.

The base, located by Colorado Springs, is right near the mountains, and storms can develop very quickly.

7 Die From Alcohol Poisoning in Cuba

Seven people have died after drinking tainted alcohol, in Cuba.

Another forty people have been hospitalized and eight of them are in serious condition.

Authorities say that the people had been drinking methyl alcohol, the kind found in antifreeze.

An investigation is underway to determine the source of the poisonous alcohol.

US Army: Sergeant Stephen M. New

Sergeant Stephen M. New, twenty-nine of Bartlett, Tennessee, died on on July 28.

He was wounded during combat in Sarobi District, Kabul Province, Afghanistan.

New was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) out of Jackson, Mississippi.

Among his completed courses were: One Station Training, US Army Airborne School, Warrior Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course; Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape Course; Special Forces Qualification Course.

Hit and Run Leaves 3 Injured in Denver

Denver police are looking for a man who is the suspect in a hit and run, on Tuesday afternoon.

Three people waiting at a bust stop were injured when a car crashed into them, near East Colfax Avenue and Josephine Street.

One of them was seriously injured, but they are all expected to recover.

The driver then got out and tried to get away, bystanders attempted to block his path, but he continued to insist on leaving, eventually running away.

Some of the bystanders snapped pictures of the man.

Police described him as black male, five foot nine, wearing a white Tshirt, and blue jeans.

4 Injured When Car Strikes Kansas City Day Care

Four people were injured after a car struck a day care in Kansas City, Missouri.

A Range Rover struck the back of a parked Cadillac, pushing the Cadillac through the front of the day care.

The eighty year old driver of the Range Rover and three children were injured.

Two of the children had to be rescued from underneath the Cadillac.

None of their injuries are life threatening.

Authorities are investigating what caused the Range Rover's driver to strike the Cadillac.

DRC M23 Rebels Given 48 Hours by The UN to Disarm

Monusco, the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, gave rebel forces an ultimatum, on Tuesday.

The M23 rebels have been given forty-eight hours to disarm or face the full might of the Monusco Intervention Brigade.

Just over three thousand UN troops make up the heavily armed brigade.

Not just the rebels are required to disarm.

All citizens in and near the city of Goma must turn in all firearms by 20:00 GMT, on Thursday.

Anyone caught after that time with a gun will be considered a rebel, and a hostile.

Mamnoon Hussain Elected President of Pakistan

Mamnoon Hussain was elected president of Pakistan, on Tuesday.

The mostly ceremonial position is not elected by the people.

Lawmakers the assemblies of the four provinces, the National Assembly, and the Senate vote to fill the position.

Hussain, a businessman, took eighty-eight percent of the votes, beating out a former judge.

He will take office on September 8.

Burst Water Main Causes Sinkhole in Denver, Closing Sheridan Boulevard

Sheridan Boulevard was shut down on Monday, in Denver.

A water main burst causing a sinkhole near Sixth Avenue.

The hole grew to twenty-seven feet long, fifteen feet wide, and ten feet deep.

For part of the morning, Sixth was closed as well, but crews were able to reopen it, once the hole stopped growing.

Hopes are that Sheridan will be reopened around midnight.

Northbound Sheridan is closed between First and Fifth, while southbound Sheridan is only closed between Fourth and Fifth.

Around twenty homes and an apartment complex are without water, due to the main being shut down.

It is not known when they will have water again.

Officials are unsure what caused the sixty-one year old pipes to burst.

105 Homes Evacuated by Oregon's Douglas Fire

One hundred and five homes have been evacuated due to the Douglas Fire, in Oregon.

Three hundred more houses are on standby, due to the approaching flames.

The Douglas Fire has consumed more than twenty-one thousand acres.

Over one thousand firefighters are battling the blaze and have achieved two percent containment.

FBI Rescues 105 Juveniles From Sex Trafficking

Ron Hosko, assistant director of the FBI's Criminal Investigative Division made a major announcement on Monday.

The FBI, working with more than two hundred and thirty local, state, and federal agencies, in seventy-six cities, made a major sting operation against sex trafficking.

One hundred and fifty arrests were made and one hundred and five juveniles were rescued in the sting.

This was the seventh time that Operation Cross Country had been put into effect.

Since 2003, more than twenty-seven hundred juveniles have been rescued in the operations.

Train Collision Injures 35 in Switzerland

Thirty-five people were injured when two commuter trains collided head on, in Switzerland.

The force of Monday's collision left the front ends of the trains in the air.

Five of the injured were in critical condition.

Efforts were still underway to rescue one of the drivers, his condition is unknown.

Officials are investigating how the two trains ended up on the same line.

17 Car Bombs Terrorize Shiite Iraq

Seventeen car bombs struck throughout Shiite Iraq, on Monday.

At least sixty people were killed in the attacks.

Over eight hundred have been killed in July, bringing the total, so far in 2013. to nearly four thousand.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Officials are blaming Al Qaeda, based on the type of bombings, the targets, and the coordination involved.

US Army: Sergeant Eric T. Lawson

Sergeant Eric T. Lawson, thirty of Stockbridge, Georgia, died on July 27.

He and another were killed when their was struck by an improvised explosive device, in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan.

It was his third tour of duty, in Afghanistan.
 
Lawson was assigned to the 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade out of Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia.

US Army: Specialist Caryn E. Nouv

Specialist Caryn E. Nouv, twenty-nine of Newport News, Virginia, died on July 27.

She and another killed when their was struck by an improvised explosive device, in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan.

It was her first tour of combat.

Nouv was assigned to the 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade out of Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia.

Police Seeking Man Who Threatened to Destroy Churches

Fort Collins, Colorado police are warning churches and temples to be wary.

A man, who is at large, has made several threats against churches, saying that they should be destroyed.

According to police, he describes himself as an Islamist Jihadist.

He is described as white, in his early thirties, six foot one, one hundred and eighty-five pounds, with medium length brown hair, green eyes, and a full beard.

When last seen, he was wearing a Tshirt around his head, face coverings, and dark glasses to hide his appearance.

Police did no release a name or photo of the man.

They are actively looking for him, due to the threats he has made.

Flooding in North Carolina Kills 2

Flooding in North Carolina claimed the lives of two people, Saturday evening.

Both of them were trying to swim, but were carried away by the swift waters.

It is also responsible for damaging more than one hundred and thirty homes, dozens of businesses, and seven highways.

Many rivers and creeks are running two feet higher than normal, causing them to flood neighboring areas.

Several towns have multiple feet of water covering everything.

5 Killed as Helicopter Crashes in Pennsylvania

Five people were killed when a helicopter crashed in Pennsylvania, late Saturday night.

About 22:30 EDT, the pilot alerted a nearby air traffic control tower that he was struggling to maintain altitude.

Soon after that the helicopter disappeared from the radar.

The FAA and NTSB are both investigating the crash.

3 Million Gather to Hear Pope Francis

An estimated three million people swarmed Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

They came to see Pope Francis give a mass.

Francis went through the crowds, touching the masses, kissing babies, sharing in food and drink, before making his speech.

During it he told those gathered that they had been called by God to be missionaries to their neighbors.

$53 Million in Jewels Stolen From Cannes Hotel

A man armed with a gun robbed The Carlton hotel in Cannes, France on Sunday.

He made off with a briefcase filled with diamonds and other jewels.

Escaping security, he made it to the street, where he disappeared in the crowded sidewalk.

The case's contents are worth about fifty-three million dollars.

Police throughout France are looking for the thief.

Bus Crash in Italy Kills 36

Thirty-six people are dead after a bus crash in southern Italy.

A bus with forty-eight people aboard fell fifty feet off a road.

Eleven people were taken to the hospital, with serious injuries.

Rescue operations were still underway, as emergency crews search for the last passenger.

Officials are trying to determine what caused the bus to leave the road and fall down the cliff.

Syrian Troops Continue Recapture of Homs

Syrian forces increased their gains in Homs, continuing their weekend offensive.

On Saturday, government forces began a heavy attack on the Khalidiya neighborhood.

The majority of Homs has been held by rebel forces, for over a year, and it had become a symbol of their rebellion.

Over the past few months, government troops have been boosted by international forces, some official, some not.

This has allowed the government to stop rebel advances and begin the recapture of some areas.

30,000 Bees Attack Texas Couple, Kill Horses and Hens

Thirty thousand bees attacked a Texas couple in Pantego.

The woman was out exercising one of her Shetland ponies when the swarm appeared.

She ran from them, into the pool, but was stung every time she came up for air.

Eventually she ran for the house, where her boyfriend opened the door for her.

He received about fifty stings, while she received over two hundred, their dog was also stung multiple times.

Both of her ponies and three hens were not so lucky, dying from the amount of stings they took.

Firefighters used special gear and foam to clear the bees out.

The bees will be tested to see if they had become Africanized, as seems likely.

Florida Shooting Leaves 7 Dead

Seven people were killed during a shooting spree in Hialeah, Florida, late Friday night.

It began when forty-two year old Pedro Vargas tried to light his apartment on fire.

The building managers rushed to the sight of the smoke only to have Vargas shoot both of them down.

Vargas then fired as many as twenty rounds from off of his balcony into the street, killing one man, and forcing responding emergency personnel to take cover.

He then went to the third floor, kicked open an apartment door, and killed all three of the occupants.

Continuing to to evade police, he ran through the building, firing off random rounds.

On the fifth floor he took two hostages and barricaded himself in their apartment.

Police attempted to negotiate with him, but around 02:00 EDT talks fell apart, a SWAT team breached the premises, and was forced to kill Vargas.

During the incident Hialeah police were joined by over one hundred officers from other jurisdictions.

72 Killed in Violence in Egypt

As hundreds of thousands of Egyptians take to the streets, in competing rallies, violence continues to grow.

Saturday saw the heaviest levels of violence, since the military removed Morsi from office.

Seventy-two people were killed and over four thousand were reportedly treated for injuries and the effects of tear gas..

According to the military, members of the Muslim Brotherhood and their supporters clashed with those who oppose them.

The military says that the fired tear gas in order to try and keep the two sides apart.

However, the Muslim Brotherhood says that the military and police opened fire on their supporters.

They say that most of the dead took single bullet shots to the head.

India and Pakistan Exchange Fire

For the sixth time in July, Indian and Pakistani border guards exchanged fire.

Saturday's incident left a Pakistani soldier dead, another injured, and an Indian border police officer injured.

Both sides say that the other started the fire fight, which lasted several hours.

The two countries have increasingly had exchanges along the Kashmir border region.

Both Koreas Celebrate 60th Anniversary of The Armistice

Saturday saw the sixtieth anniversary to the signing of the Korean War Armistice.

In the North, it was celebrated with one of the largest military parades that the country had ever seen.

China's Vice President Li Yuanchao joined Kim Jong-un during the festivities.

The North's celebrations focused on their "Victory in the Great Fatherland Liberation War" and "defeat of the American invaders".

South Korea celebrated in a more subdued tone, honoring those who died to maintain the country's freedom.

President Park Geun-hye reminded them that the war is not actually over and that just a ceasefire keeps the North from renewing the fighting.

1 Killed 17 Injured in Tunisian Clashes

Thousands protested in Tunisia for a second day after the assassination of Mohamed Brahmi.

Labor unions had called for a general strike, so people were out in force.

Most of the protesters are demanding that the government resign and allow for new elections.


Hundreds more came out in support of the government.

The counter protests led to clashes, where at least one was killed and seventeen injured.

Many people believe that the Islamist Ennahda party, which controls most of the government, was behind the killing.

Forty-two members of the opposition resigned from parliament, in protest of the killing.

They are also demanding that a new government be formed.

23 Killed in Cairo Violence

Thousands of people rallied in Cairo, Friday evening, in support of the military, praising them for removing former president Morsi from power.

The Muslim Brotherhood was quick to hold rival rallies, demanding Morsi's reinstatement.

Clashes soon began between the two groups.

Twenty-three people were killed and over two hundred injured.

Both sides blame the violence on the other, with the Muslim Brotherhood also blaming security forces.

They say that the military attacked their gathering, opening fire on them.

Attacks in Pakistan Kill 45

Two bombings in Parachinar, Pakistan left forty-five dead.

Seventy-five people were injured in the twin blasts, which occurred minutes apart.

One of the bombs struck near a Shiite mosque, while the other exploded in a Shiite neighborhood.

The first was carried out by a suicide bomber and the second was a car bomb.

A group allied to the Taliban claimed the attacks.

Philippines Bombing Kills 6

Six people died when a bomb exploded at a restaurant in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines.

Twenty-eight more were injured when the explosion tore through the building, Friday night.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Police and security forces have been called out and are guarding against more attacks.

Plane Crashes Into Columbus Home

A plane crashed into a Columbus, Ohio home, on Thursday morning.

Neighbors rushed to the scene helping both aboard to safety.

Others used garden hoses to fight the fire that the crash started.

The plane had taken off from Columbus Municipal Airport just minutes before.

Both occupants of the plane were flown, via helicopter, to the hospital with severe burns, but are in stable condition.

The residents of the home, one of whom was home, were not injured in the incident.

An investigation by the FAA is underway, to determine what caused the plane the to crash.

Spain Train Crash Toll Rises to 80

Officials in Spain have raised the death toll of Wednesday's train crash.

They are now saying that eighty people died and one hundred and sixty were injured.

The accident threw passenger cars off of the tracks, tearing at least one open.

Smoke was seen coming out of the torn car, but the fire was quickly extinguished.

Authorities stated that the train was going at least twice the speed limit, when the accident occurred.

Tunisians Protest After Brahmi Assassinated

Across Tunisia mass protests occurred after Mohamed Brahmi was assassinated, on Thursday.

In some towns and cities, protest turned to riot, as mobs began breaking windows, smashing cars, and lighting street fires.
  
Police responded with tear gas, to clear the streets.

Labor unions have called for a general strike, throughout the country, on Friday.

Brahmi, one of the leading members of the opposition, was extremely popular with the people.

Many believe that the Islamist Ennahda party, which controls most of the government, was behind the killing.

In February, another popular opposition member was assassinated.

Chokri Belaid's death led to protests, violence, and the resignations of several members of Ennahda's government.

28 Killed in Iraqi Violence

Violence in Iraq, on Thursday claimed twenty-eight more lives.

Fourteen of those occurred when a car bomb exploded in Muqdadiya, injuring dozens more.

A bomb exploded in a garden, where a wedding was taking place, killing four.

Three people were killed when another explosion occurred at a cafe in Madaen.

In four separate incidents in Baghdad, four people were shot and killed.

Three people died in two shootings and a bombing in Mosul.

Nearly eight hundred people have been killed in violent attacks, in July alone.

Many Iraqis are losing faith that there will ever be a stop to the violence.

US Army: Specialist Rob L. Nichols

Specialist Rob L. Nichols, twenty-four of Colorado Springs, Colorado, died on July 23.

He and two other soldiers were killed when a suicide bomber attacked his unit's convoy, in Soltan Kheyl, Afghanistan.

Nichols was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division out of Fort Stewart, Georgia.

US Army: 1st Lieutenant Jonam Russell

1st Lieutenant Jonam Russell, twenty-five of Cornell, Arizona, died on July 23.

He and two other soldiers were killed when a suicide bomber attacked his unit's convoy, in Soltan Kheyl, Afghanistan.

Russell was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division out of Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Sergeant Stefan M. Smith, twenty-four of Glennville, Georgia, died on July 23.

He and two other soldiers were killed when a suicide bomber attacked his unit's convoy, in Soltan Kheyl, Afghanistan.

Smith was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division out of Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Pennsylvania County Allows Same Sex Marriage Despite State Ban

Montgomery County, Pennsylvania began issuing same sex marriage licenses on Wednesday.

This makes them the first in Pennsylvania to do so.

It also sets up further debates, as the state has a ban on same sex marriage.

The state has yet to make a remark about the licenses, but they could try to have the licenses blocked and rule them illegal.

Until the state makes a move, the county will continue with the licenses.

35 Killed in Spanish Train Derailment

Thirty-five people have been killed in a train derailment near Santiago de Compostela.

Dozens more were injured in the crash.

The accident threw passenger cars off of the tracks, tearing at least one open.

Smoke was seen coming out of the torn car, but there were no reports of fire.

At this time it is not known what caused the train to derail.

The Interior Ministry is investigating the crash.

17 Killed and 55 Wounded in Iraq Attacks

Attacks in Iraq, on Wednesday, left seventeen dead and fifty-five wounded.

It began in Bashmaya, when militants attacked a police station, killing nine officers and injuring another two.

As emergency crews were responding, a roadside bomb struck an ambulance, injuring the driver and his assistant.

A car bomb exploded in a residential part of Tuz Khormato, injuring thirty-five and damaging houses.

Two soldiers were killed and five wounded when a car bomb exploded in Kirkuk.

Another explosion killed three and wounded eleven in Qahira.

In Baghdad, three people were killed in a shooting.

The situation in Iraq continues to deteriorate, with attacks the deadliest they've been in nearly a decade. 

Attack in Sukkur, Pakistan Leaves 5 Dead 30 Injured

Five people were killed and thirty injured when militants attacked government buildings in Sukkur, Pakistan.

At least ten gunmen attacked the complex, exchanging gun fire with security personnel and throwing explosives.

Some of the buildings caught on fire and others collapsed, because of the explosions.

Rescue workers searched through the debris for victims.

The complex is said to belong to Pakistan's spy agency.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

US Army: Specialist Anthony R. Maddox

Specialist Anthony R. Maddox, twenty-two of Port Arthur, Texas, died on July 22 in Landstuhl, Germany.

He was injured in Andar, Afghanistan.

Maddox was assigned to the 10th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, out of Fort Drum, New York.

His decorations include: Army Achievement Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Badge.

Derailed Train Stops Feet Away From Houses

A train derailed and crashed through a Denver building, Tuesday morning.

According to witnesses, the train came off the tracks, went through a garage, and flew over a ditch.

Luckily it stopped before striking houses that lay not much further away.

No one was hurt in the accident.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.

10 Injured in Airplane Crash at LaGuardia

Ten people were injured when a Southwest Airlines 737 crashed after landing, on Monday evening, at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

The 737 landed safely, but as it was going down the runway it's front landing gear collapsed.

It then skidded down the runway for several hundred feet, before veering into grass beside the runway.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.

La Guardia was forced to keep the runway closed until Tuesday morning when cranes were able to move the airplane.

With only one runway operational, the airport saw major delays.

4 Killed by Suicide Donkey Bomber

Three NATO soldiers and their translator were killed in Wardak, Afghanistan.

A man riding a donkey rode up to their convoy and blew himself up.

Four Afghan soldiers and a NATO soldier were also injured in the attack.

NATO officials did not initially release the nationalities of the four soldiers, but it later was released that they were Americans.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Taliban is being blamed for it, as they carry out most suicide bombings.

Tokyo Commuters Lift Train Off Woman

During Tokyo's busy morning rush hour a woman fell between the platform and a train.

Forty bystanders rushed to join transit workers and police and pushed the train car off of her, so that she could be lifted to safety.

A single train car weighs more than thirty-three tons.

The woman was not seriously injured in the incident, but was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Train service resumed just eight minutes later.

It's a Boy For William and Kate

On Monday afternoon the Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Kate, gave birth to a son.

His Royal Highness, Prince of Cambridge weighed eight pounds and six ounces.

Both he and his mother are in good health, after the birth.

He is now the third in line to the crown, following his grandfather and father.

It has not yet been released what his name is, and that information may not be released for over a week.

4 Killed in Egyptian Clashes

Four people were killed and dozens injured when opposing protesters clashed near Tahrir Square in Cairo, on Monday.

According to witnesses, a pro Morsi Muslim Brotherhood march passed by the square and fired fireworks at the opponents of the former president, who were in the square.

The sides then began throwing stones at each other.

Interim President Adly Mansour responded to the violence by asking both sides to cease violence against each other.

He stated that only together could they make Egypt strong again.

500 Prisoners Broken out of Prison in Al Qaeda Attack

Abu Ghraib before Monday's attack

Al Qaeda made a heavily coordinated attack on two prisons in Iraq, early Monday morning.

Just outside Baghdad, at Abu Ghraib prison, suicide bombers drove cars loaded with explosives into the gates, and blew them open.

Gunmen, backed with mortars and RPGs, then attacked the prison as well as held off reinforcements.

By the time helicopters showed up, and chased the militants off, more than five hundred prisoners had been freed and escaped.

Most of the escapees are members of Al Qaeda who were awaiting execution.

Ten guards and four attackers were killed in the battle.

In Taji, another prison was attacked at the same time.

Guards there were able to keep the walls from being breached and no prisoners escaped.

Sixteen guards and six militants were killed there.

Later in the day, twenty-two soldiers and three civilians were killed when a suicide car bomber struck a military convoy in Kokchali.

After that attack, leaflets were found at several mosques, in which Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attacks.
