At nineteen George escaped the orphanage when the Baltimore Orioles signed him as a pitcher.
In the summer of 1914 he was sold to the Boston Red Sox, and on July 11, 1914 he made his major league debut.
His teammates considered him naive, and gave him the nickname of Babe, it would last forever.
The Babe would lead the Red Sox to two world series, but then in 1920 he was sold to the New York Yankees.
With the Yankees he was switched from pitching to the outfield, and he became the biggest star in baseball until he retired in 1935.
During his time with New York they won seven American League Championships and four World Series.
