USS Jacksonville Loses Periscope

USS Jacksonville, at sea, before the incident
While conducting a routine patrol, in the Persian Gulf, the USS Jacksonville's crew heard a "thump".

They then tried raising the submarines periscope, but found it wouldn't cooperate.

Raising the second periscope was successful, and they quickly realized that the first had been torn off.

In the distance they saw a vessel continuing away from them, efforts to contact the vessel failed.

It is believed that the other vessel hit the periscope, and tore it off.

Officials are investigating the incident, and the USS Jacksonville is headed for repairs.
