Most of the protesters belong to unions, and are specifically workers for Iberia airlines, which has gone on strike.
The protesters and strikers have clashed with police who are attempting to keep the other areas of the airport clear.
Iberia airlines announced last week that they will be reducing their work force of eighteen thousand by thirty-eight hundred people.
The airline has been losing money, and feels that the cuts are the only way to keep the company in the air.
Organizers plan to run this strike for five days, with two more five day strikes to follow in March.
Estimates are that the strike will cost the country over thirteen million dollars a day.
Spain is already dealing with an unemployment rate of twenty-six percent.
