Governor Brownback Signs Kansas Abortion Laws

Governor Sam Brownback signed into law measures that place new limits upon abortions saying, "All human life is sacred. It's beautiful. With this, we continue to build this culture of life in our state.

The Governor signed them on Friday, thirteen days after they had been passed by the legislature.

One bill bans abortions, which are based on the sex of the baby.

A second ends tax breaks for abortion providers.

The third defined life as beginning at fertilization, but did not do anything to limit abortion.

Opponents of the bills say that they threaten access to abortions, while their supporters say they just clarify things.

However, some supporters are upset that the bills did not go further and do more to limit abortion.

Kansas' laws follow moves by Arkansas and North Dakota to tighten their own abortion laws.
