Citing his age and weakening health, King Albert II announced he will abdicating the Belgian throne.
On July 21, the country's national holiday, he will step down and his fifty-three year old son, Prince Philippe, will be crowned.
At the age of seventy-nine, Albert has been king for nearly twenty years.
He became king on August 2, 1993, following the death of his brother.
