President Putin flew to Sakhalin Island, on the east coast of Russia, on Tuesday to over see war games, he ordered.
With one hundred and sixty thousand troops, thousands of tanks and armored vehicles, one hundred and thirty planes, and seventy ships participating the war games are Russia's largest since the Cold War ended.
On Friday, Putin ordered the games to be held, and they began that night.
Russia has held several unscheduled war games over the past few months.
