It lasted on through the night and into Thursday morning.
The fighting took place in the Goshta district of Nangahar province of Afghanistan, and the Khyber tribal area of Pakistan.
An Afghan officer was killed, two were wounded, and two Pakistani officers were wounded as well.
Both sides accuse the other of starting the fight.
The attack reignited hostilities between the two countries.
