Police arrested provincial governor General Weiding Assi Assoue, chief military judge General David Gomine, member of parliament Mahamat Kadre, and former health minister Saleh Makki.
According to state prosecutor Mahamat Saleh Younous, the four were caught with documents in their possession which outlined their plans for a coup.
They will be tried for "trying to destabilize the constitutional order and the security of the state".
Chad most recently saw a coup attempt in 2008.
