The Sindhurakshak exploded not long after midnight, Wednesday morning, and continued to burn for hours.
Three crew members were injured and another eighteen are missing, but presumed dead at this point.
The eighteen were below decks when the explosion occurred, while the three who were injured were on the deck.
It is unclear what caused the accident, but sabotage has been ruled out.
An investigation is underway to determine what exactly did cause the tragedy.
