During Pauline Marois's victory speech asixty-two year old man pulled a gun and then shot two people who tried to disarm him, killing one of them.
He then left the building, starting a fire, some witnesses say with a gas bomb.
The man was arrested by police, his identity has not been released.
Parti Quebecois was celebrating their return to power, as they won fifty-four of the one hundred and twenty-five seats in the province.
While they did not attain a majority, they still have the largest number of seats, and so gain control.
They also elected their first woman premier in Marois, who has promised to hold another secession referendum "if the conditions are right".
In 1980 and 1995, the PQ held referendums, both of which failed, though the 1995 vote did so by less than one percent.
