President of Mauritania Shot, Leaves For France

President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz of Mauritania was flown to Paris early Sunday.

The President underwent surgery, after being shot by a military patrol, Saturday night.

No word was given on what medical treatment he will be receiving in France.

Officially, the shooting is being ruled an accident, but initially it was reported that he had survived an assassination attempt and two military officers have been detained over the incident.

Some believe that the shooting was a successful coup, and that he left the country as part of an agreement to leave power.

Prime Minister Moulaye Ould Mohamed Laghdaf is running the country in the President's absence.
