6 Accused of Conspiracy to Fix the New York Mayoral Race

New York State Senator Malcolm Smith and five others have been charged with conspiracy to fix the New York City mayoral race.

Smith, a Democrat, is accused of giving, and organizing the giving, of bribes to Republican leaders.

The GOP officials are accused of accepting the bribes in an agreement to place Smith on the ballot, as a Republican.

Bronx GOP Chairman Joseph Savino, New York City Councilman Dan Halloran, Queens GOP Chairman Vincent Tabone, Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin, and Spring Valley Deputy Mayor Joseph Desmaret were the other five charged.

The FBI conducted an investigation, including wire taps, and says they have all involved recorded, as proof of their guilt.

Smith's lawyer said that the charges against his client will be dropped, once all the evidence is known, and suggested that Smith had been helping the FBI in their investigation.
