He and four others were killed when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device, near Maiwand, Afghanistan.
It was his fourth tour, between Afghanistan and Iraq.
Phillips was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division out of Fort Bliss, Texas.
His decorations include: Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal with Valor, Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Afghan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, NATO Medal, Expert Infantry Badge, Parachutist Badge, and Combat Infantryman Badge.
